About Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy treats cancers using high-energy x-rays that pinpoint and destroy cancer cells. Radiation can be used alone or in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy.

Radiation therapy is similar to having an x-ray taken, but the dose of radiation is higher and given over a longer period of time. The goal is to focus the radiation on the cancerous tumor(s) while keeping it away from your normal tissues.

There are many types of radiation therapy available. The best choice for you depends on the type of cancer you have and where it is located. Your Essex Oncology specialist will develop and deliver a treatment strategy that is designed to meet your individual needs, and our team will work closely with you to manage your symptoms and any side effects of radiation therapy.
